The Right Tool for the Job: Promoting Student Choice

Session 3
Kim Deveaux — Ethical Culture School

Progressive educators are still wrestling with the idea of what the relationship between progressive ideals and technology is. At our school we work to be very thoughtful that our technology program is meaningful, child centered and projects are process oriented. We encourage students to assess their learning and choose the tools that are best for them.

In this session we will explore how to manage a classroom so that students can be in charge of their own learning. We will look at how teachers can use technology to differentiate their instruction and encourage student choice. We will look at different tools students can use for note taking and project creating and will suggest language educators can use to create this empowering classroom environment.

Conversational Practice

In this session we will learn together as a group. Participants will be guided on how to identify their own dominant learning style(s) (ie. linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, interpersonal, interpersonal or/and naturalistic). Participants will then break up into learning style groups and try out tools that support their learning style. They will share resources and ideas in a wiki of how to teach for students of that learning style. We will end the session with a discussion of how to manage a classroom that supports students of many learning styles and I will share some of examples of ways we’re doing this at my school. Participants will leave the session with access to the wiki which will have resources on how to support a variety of learning styles.
