Teachers are experimenting with new ways of empowering the learners in their classrooms. We ask the question: What will turn passive students into heroes in their own learning? Through participation in a variety of activities that model student powers, we investigate what new skills and strengths, students need in the digital age. Many of these are new for teachers and for students. We look at the steps that educators can take to learn these skills and pass them onto their students. By introducing practices such as meditation and mindful awareness, we will explore how to manage our stresses to be more present for students.  Discussion will also include how to share these practices school-wide.","Description":"Through my professional development work, classes at Naropa University's Contemplative Education Master's program, and my own practice, I am working with a Professor of Education and the Director of Counseling from Bowdoin College, my school's Dean of Students, and the President of Chewonki, to create a 4-day institute for educators next summer.  This institute is geared toward building mindfulness skills, enhanced self-awareness and the development of collegial support as pathways to a more balanced and sustainable commitment to working in education.  I would like to bring some of the program work to educon via a mini \u201cretreat-style\u201d conversation.\r\n\r\nAs teachers, we often feel guilty or unprofessional when we experience strong emotions in the classroom, and often feel we have to hide or ignore our worries. This results in a high turnover rate in education. However, these stresses and emotions can be seen not as something to avoid but as tools to help us become more aware of ourselves and therefore more present for our students. Using hands-on techniques like meditation and mindful awareness, in conjunction with brain research on stress, this workshop is designed to give teachers tangible tools to manage the myriad emotions that can come with teaching.\r\n\r\nIt is imperative that teachers have a community to reinforce this work. Time will be devoted to discussing ways teachers can bring these practices to their schools.  I will share how I\u2019ve created a \u201cmindful morning\u201d before school program for faculty and a \u201cyoga-tation\u201d activity for middle schoolers, combining yoga and meditation.","Link":[],"Audience":["All School Levels"],"Practice":"This workshop is designed to be hands-on and conversational. We will identify the biggest challenges we faced, describe how we faced them, and encourage audience members to share their own strategies.","Description":"Last year, a group of faculty at The Baldwin School began meeting informally to talk about teaching with technology.  We decided the main obstacle keeping us from moving forward was a lack of access for too many of our students and a culture that viewed technology as either an encroachment (faculty) or entertainment (students). A 1:1 program, we decided, could change both.  We formed an ad-hoc 1:1 group, and then, through a very grass roots process, we decided on a platform and a process for implementing this program.  We built our own hybrid bring your own device program.  It was the collaborative grass-roots nature of the process that we credit with the success of the implementation.   We faced many challenges, including gaining buy-in from all constituencies, choosing a platform, aligning the technology choices with our pedagogy, managing costs, and handling upgrades to our technology infrastructure.  We will share our approach to these challenges, showing how we came out relatively unscathed on the other side.  Through group conversation, we will ask attendees share their own approaches to tackling technology initiatives.","Link":["http:\/\/geekymomblog.com"],"Audience":["All School Levels"],"Practice":"For the conversation piece, we will have attendees in small groups think about a big technology initiative that might be on the horizon or that they have just gone through.  We would ask them to think through what the process might look like when working with a faculty group.  Who would they include in that group? What are the pain points and how would the group address them? How would the group involve the administration? Students? Parents? How will the group reflect on the process and improve it? What role will the group have in maintaining the change they initiate? Groups will share their conversations. We want attendees to leave with a better idea for how small groups of faculty can effect institutional change by working together and by thinking institutionally together.
